| Title: | Semantic Web – an Overview |
| Venue: | 5104-Pilani |
Most of the Web's content today is designed for humans to read, not for computer programs to manipulate meaningfully. Computers can adeptly parse Web pages for layout and routine processing—here a header, there a link to another page—but in general, computers have no reliable way to process the semantics.
The next generation of the Web, named Semantic Web, is an attempt to standardize ways to express semantics. It will enable computers to combine related data meaningfully. The Knowledge Representation community and the Web Standardization community (W3C) are working together to develop logics and representations to achieve this end. This lecture will present an overview of the same with pointers to resources for further study. Based on audience response, a follow up lecture may also be scheduled.
Pre-requites:
The talk will mainly be targeted at students with CS/IS/Math background in their 3rd year. Some basic knowledge about the Web will be useful. Some elementary set theory/boolean logic will also help.
