The growing energy demand and declining crude quality have brought several issues in refining to the fore. The crude unit is the first important unit process in a refinery. This talk covers the current global situation in crude oil availability and the drivers of crude oil processing such as crude quality. It will also address crude unit operation and cover some of the common issues encountered in crude oil processing namely salt separation, fouling and corrosion. The intended audience is people interested in developing a basic understanding of crude unit operations. The talk will also cover a case study in corrosion. The talk is intended to give a flavor of these concepts and will not delve into technical details of how to optimize operation of a crude unit or the functioning of other units in a refinery.
